Q. How much will I be paid?

A. We've constructed a separate page giving details of wages and how much tax you'll pay, for more information click here.

Q. What are the working hours?

The following is intended only as a guide as there are various projects which require tradesmen, each with its' own work schedule; you will be informed of the location of the work, the specific hours you will work and the work rotation schedule in the job offer made to you. In some cases, it may be possible for you to choose which location you prefer although we cannot offer you a guarantee that this will be the case at this point in time.

General Guidelines:

Industrial workers will be required to work 10 hours per day

Pipeline workers - 12 hours per day.

Hours worked over 40 hours per week will be paid as overtime at 1.5 times the basic rate of pay.

Q. How many breaks are there?

A. There are 3 main breaks: 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon and 30 minutes for lunch.

Q. What leave I will I be entitled to? (General Work Rotation)

A. 12 days on and two days off for 12 weeks then two weeks off; in some cases 12 days on and two days off for six months then one month off.

Note: This varies from site to site, so the above is only to be used as a guideline until you receive a specific job offer which will give full details for the specific location the job offer applies to.

Q. Will I be entitled to receive any Holiday Pay?

A. Yes, although this will be paid to you weekly on top of your wages and not separately, so you will not receive any pay whilst you take your holiday leave.

Q. Who will pay my wages?

A. Your employer will pay your wages WEEKLY, and not Euroresource.

Q. Will I get paid for overtime?

A. Yes. Overtime will be paid on any hours worked on any day that exceed 8 hours per day. The rate payable for overtime will be at a time and a half.

Q. Will I be paid the same as Canadian workers?

A. Yes. All workers will receive the same rates that have been agreed between the union and the employer.

Q. Will I need to open a Canadian Bank account?

A. Yes, you will receive help to open a Canadian bank account shortly after your arrival.

Q. Is a Trade Union involved with this employment and will I have to be a member?

A. Yes.

Q. Do I have to pay for the trades test?

A. No. Your employer will pay the fee of $450.

ACCOMODATION

Q. What is the accommodation like, and will I have to pay for it?

A. The accommodation is of the worker’s camp type, single rooms and shared dining and washing facilities as well as recreation areas. Your accommodation will be supplied by your employer and is rent-free. Also, there are many on-site facilities available including gym, bar, cinema, shops etc.

Note: The facilities vary from site to site, although the above is a good representation of the facilities available on all sites.

Q. Will my employer provide canteen facilities?

A. Yes, food is free for workers.

Travel and Health Insurance

Q. What are the travel arrangements?

A. You will be provided with a return air ticket from the nearest civilian airport to you that offers direct or connecting flights to Alberta. You will meet you at the airport in Alberta by a representative and will then be given transport from the airport either directly to your place of work in Alberta, or to a hotel near the airport (paid for by your employer) before traveling to the location of your work.

Q. Will my family’s hotel accommodation be paid for?

A. No.

Q. If I’m required to stay for a short period in a hotel, what is included?

A. Only the cost of the room will be paid, you will be responsible for settling any other hotel charges.

Q. How do I get a work permit?

A. Euroresource will take care of this. The employer already has obtained the necessary government permits to employ foreign tradesmen.

Q. How will I get a visa?

A. After you receive an offer of work from the employer, Euroresource will make an application for your visa if you need one.

Q. How much will a visa cost?

A. Nothing. The charges will be paid on your behalf.

Q. What about medical emergency, will I be covered for medical expenses?

A. Competitively priced medical cover will be arranged by your employer and the cost of this will be deducted from your wages weekly.

Note: First aid treatment is available on site and is supplied by trained medical professionals.

Q. What about safety?

A. The government of Alberta requires that all construction workers sit and pass a construction safety test before commencing work on any construction site. You will receive training before sitting the test and will not be allowed ‘on site’ until you get a pass mark. The test and training is in English, so you must be able to speak, read and write in English - no exceptions allowed.
